VII.5.19 Pompeii. c.1830. Drawing by Gell, looking south from roof of Baths towards arches into the Forum.
According to Gell, “this represents the place as it appears from the roof of the natatorium or piscina of the baths, the cone or dome of which forms a principal object in the foreground, and which, from its construction, would evidently have resisted the attacks of time, had it not projected above the soil of the vineyard.”

According to Fiorelli, the west side of the insula contained a number of large shops with an upper floor, between them was the entrance to the Forum Baths.
Although the shops did not have any particular merit to their construction, many rich objects were found some of which must have fallen from the upper floors.
